Please click on the small images to see the large views. No frills, no fancy stuff, and nothing particularly wrong with it, except 30 years of neglect in storage. With its plain “open back” shell, this is a generic banjo reminiscent of today’s Deering Goodtime banjo. The Deering is a better instrument, of course, more solidly made of better materials. It would be a heavy understatement to say that the action had crept up over the years. As it stands, this banjo was actually unplayable. While these old Kays are not known for their brilliant tone, there was no reason for it to continue with this original all-maple bridge. The maple top is soft enough to suck up what few high frequencies make their way down the strings. What was needed here was a nice ebony topped banjo bridge. And, the friction fifth peg is a difficult little piece of hardware that we don’t need to suffer any more.

Stromberg-Voisinet Aero- uke c. Some of Kay’s lower-grade instruments were marketed under the Knox and Kent brand names. In addition to manufacturing instruments for sale under its own brands, Kay was also a prolific manufacturer of “house branded” guitars and folk instruments for other Chicago-based instrument makers and, at times, for major department stores including Sears and Montgomery Ward. Kay also made guitar amplifiers , beginning with designs carried over from the old Stromberg company. Kay eventually subcontracted its amplifier production to Chicago music industry rival Valco in the s.
Decline on Katz-era — [ edit ] After the retirement of Kuhrmeyer in , the company was taken over by Sidney M. The product line of Kay was shifted toward electric musical instruments on demands, and in , the company moved to a new factory in Elk Grove Village, Illinois.

If you’re not familiar with my site, it’s simple, and you’ll love it or hate it: It’s not a fancy site but it remains unchanged since ’98 so I figure, “if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it. Just click on any underlined text and it should open a picture; if you move your cursor over the pic and there’s a magnifying glass displayed instead of your cursor, click the pic and it will expand it to larger size.
These guitars already have a great vintage vibe with an authentic looking two-tone sunburst gloss finish, parchment parts, and tinted neck, so the vintage logo is icing on the cake. Other features include C-shaped maple neck with maple fingerboard and modern 9. Like the early vintage models this guitar also has stacked knobs with a volume and tone on each pot. The tone pots are the click type, rather than a smooth taper; nice touch.
It might seem odd to have a Jaguar logo but we wanted to have a little fun with it and the two models are very close in styling, especially on these Vintage Modified models. We also did a Jaguar with a Jazzmaster logo! The logo job is perfect with several coats of nitro finish, wet sanding between coats, built up to be as thick as the logo so the outline isn’t visible pic here.
Suffice it to say it definitely looks like a regular factory logo.

It is in fact the very first “Club-Style” guitar that I have seen with Hofner-fitted active electrics. So, it was even more disturbing to hear that the guitar, after being purchased “on-line”, had arrived in pieces and was in very poor condition. Luckily, the new owner, Bob Cocozza, has employed the services of James Payze in the UK Red Barn Repairs to restore the guitar, the results of which can be seen on the linked page.
It is interesting to see that this guitar was fitted with a centre body sustain block, which is very unusual on a “Club-Style” guitar..

Go to menu top I never heard anything better than a Fender if we’re talking about the big manufacturers. Later on, in the Guitar section, I’ll also talk about Standel and EchoSonic , but they’re produced in such small numbers that it’s fair to say they’ll only have historic interest to the most of us So As long as you get a tube Fender you’ll probably be on the right track, because they all sound pretty good.
It doesn’t have to be vintage at all, but they do look pretty cool. Actually I started out playing a vintage Vox AC 30 and it wasn’t bad at all. The sound was very ‘tube’ and that’s what you’re looking for, but Fender is still the better choice for Rockabilly. Fender Bassman ’59 reissue Many Rockabilly guitarists play a ’59 Fender Bassman or similar – vintage or reissue. It sounds perfect for rockabilly. The distortion which is where you get the right sound from changes dramatically with change of volume.
That’s very impractically when you play live, where you have to adjust the volume after the size and acoustics of the place where you playing. I found a way to get around that and always have the same “Bassman-sound” no matter what volume I’m playing at Here’s a page with photos of some actual recording sheets where you can see how the SansAmp was set. I play through my Fender Showman which has a very clean sound at all volumes.

Harmony instruments were produced on an industrial scale. Even the less common models can’t be considered “rare”. Remember that all Harmony made guitars this means all guitars on this website are still considered low grade instruments by most players and collectors, and can’t be compared in value to the “great” names as Gibson, Fender, Martin As a result, only a handful of guys in the world are ready to pay real money for a rare Harmony model. In the Harmony world, the interested buyer is often rarer than the guitar itself.
Q – How can I date my Harmony guitar from the serial number? A – Usually you will find two stamps inside your Harmony guitar.
Antique and Vintage Banjos
I’m 19 and I am usually plucking on my mandolin or strumming my guitar. Recently, I found a Sears Silvertone banjo. I have no clue how old it is, but I found some Mel Bay books inside the case with the date of I’ve been told the banjo was given to the former owner, so the banjo might be older than The banjo doesn’t sound good to me at all. I am wondering if this banjo is worth taking it into a local store for examining and perhaps polishing up the instrument for proper playing.
